Once a country retreat for 19th-century city dwellers looking for tranquility and a respite from harried city life, Wauwatosa has retained its bucolic charm. Today this highly sought-after suburb is one of Milwaukee’s most dynamic areas. Located just four miles west of downtown Milwaukee, Wauwatosa offers residents all the urban sophistication of a sprawling city with the close-knit community feel of a small town. Residents are proud of this pretty place and work together to enrich Wauwatosa life through beautification programs and public art endeavors, like the Tosa Mural Program. With a name meaning ‘firefly,’ Wauwatosa cultivates an atmosphere of creativity and whimsy, as seen in its charming downtown village, complete with fairy lights, a walkable brick plaza, and colorful signs depicting its namesake.
 
The first permanent settlement in Wauwatosa was by Charles Hart, in 1835, and soon more residents followed. The historic Little Red Store was built in 1854 and, after serving as everything from a grocery store to a library, this charming piece of history has been fully restored and now belongs to the Wauwatosa Historical Society.

Milwaukee's best barbecue restaurant, Maxie's elevates Southern food with a decadent menu of fresh seafood, craft cocktails, boisterous Cajun and Creole flavors, and a raw bar. At Blue's Egg, Chef Joe Muench has crafted a modern American menu that Wauwatosa residents generally consider to be Milwaukee's best breakfast. Wauwatosa’s devoted residents make a point to connect the community – and the evidence is in the stellar lineup of thoughtfully planned events. Tosa Tonight, Wauwatosa’s summer concert series features a night of music under the stars from local, national, and international talent, as well as food and drinks from the area’s most acclaimed restaurants and businesses. Hart Fest, which was started to engage the Wauwatosa community in the spirit of giving to organizations that greatly impact the area, brings the Village of Wauwatosa alive with performances from the Wauwatosa School Of Music, skateboard demonstrations, and a walk-run. The largest competitive road cycling series in the nation, Tour of America’s Dairyland gathers passionate cyclists, both professional and amateur, from more than 40 states and 15 countries, to ride through 11 Milwaukee communities. Set at the historic Kneeland-Walker Grounds, Prosit Tosa is an Oktoberfest the whole family can enjoy. With live music, pretzels and craft beer, and a vendor village with Cream City Caramels and cookies, this is Wauwatosa’s most delicious way to celebrate the fall season.
